Distracted driving PSA Essays - Transport, Road Safety, Free Essays Distracted driving PSA Distracted driving is the act of driving while engaged in other activities; such as looking after children, talking on the phone or to a passenger, texting , eating , watching videos , rubbernecking or reading. These activities take the driver's attention away from the road. All distractions compromise the safety of the driver, passengers, bystanders and those in other vehicles. In 2015 alone, 3,477 people were killed, and 391,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashe s involving distracted drivers. During daylight hours, approximately 660,000 drivers are using cell phones while driving. That creates enormous potential for deaths and injuries on U.S. roads. Teens were the largest age group reported as distracted at the time of fatal crashes. Beginning July 1, 2013 texting while driving becomes a primary traffic offense in Virginia. It is illegal for any person operating a moving motor vehicle on the state's highways to use any handheld personal communications device It is also unlawful to read any email or text message currently transmitted to or previously stored within the device. Violation of any provision of this section shall constitute a traffic infraction punishable, for a first offense, by a fine of $125 and, for a second or subsequent offense, by a fine of $250.
